High-speed BOPP label coating — operating at 80 to 200 metres per minute — is where PSA emulsion performance really separates. An adhesive that behaves perfectly at 30 m/min on a trial coater can foam, streak, and delaminate at production speeds. Here is what you need to know to get consistent results.
The Speed Problem
At high coating speeds, the adhesive has less time to level and wet the substrate before it hits the drying oven. For most direct gravure or Meyer rod coating at 80–150 m/min, working viscosity should be 1,500–3,500 cP (Brookfield, 25°C). Surface tension must be matched to the corona-treated BOPP surface — if too high, you will see crawling and pinholes at speed.
| Line Speed | Working Viscosity | Key Risk |
|---|---|---|
| 30–50 m/min | 2,000–4,000 cP | Over-coating, ooze |
| 80–120 m/min | 1,500–3,000 cP | Foam, pinholes |
| 120–150 m/min | 1,200–2,500 cP | Coat weight drop, delamination |
Common High-Speed Coating Problems
Foaming
Add silicone defoamer at 0.1–0.2%. Check pump speed and avoid introducing air into the adhesive tank.
Coat Weight Drop
At higher speeds, metering system removes more adhesive. Adjust metering rod gap or gravure cell volume when changing line speed.
Delamination
Increase corona treatment level. Check treatment age — BOPP corona decays and old stock should be re-treated before coating.

Drying Efficiency at Speed
Water-based PSA requires complete water removal before the adhesive contacts the release liner. Undried adhesive causes blocking — the liner sticks permanently. At double the line speed, you need roughly 1.5–1.8x the drying energy, not double, because thinner coat weights dry faster.
Coat Weight Recommendations
- Standard paper labels: 18–22 gsm dry
- BOPP film labels: 20–25 gsm dry
- Aggressive permanent applications: 22–28 gsm dry
- Below 18 gsm: peel adhesion drops significantly
- Above 28 gsm on BOPP: risk of ooze at die-cut edges
Anchorage Testing
Apply coated label stock to stainless steel, allow 24 hours dwell, then peel at 180°. Failure should be cohesive (adhesive splits) not adhesive (adhesive pulls cleanly off the film). Adhesive failure means anchorage problem — increase corona treatment level.
